How to Choose Your First Waist Beads
Choosing your first waist beads can feel overwhelming with so many colours, styles, and options available. This guide cuts through the noise and gives you a straightforward framework for making your choice.
Start with fit
Before anything else, check that a strand will fit you. Our strands are 50 inches long. For a comfortable fit, your measurement at the position you want to wear them should be 48 inches or under.
To take your measurement, see How to Measure for Waist Beads. If you're unsure about sizing, our Fit Guide has everything you need.
Choose a position
Think about where you want the beads to sit on your body:
- High waist (above the navel) — stays in place well, easy to hide under clothing
- Natural waist (at or just below the navel) — the most common everyday position
- Low waist / hip (hip bones) — a relaxed, lower placement
You can wear more than one strand at different positions. Many people start with one and add more over time.
Think about colour
Colour is one of the most personal choices when it comes to waist beads. Some people choose colours based on personal meaning or cultural tradition. Others simply choose what they're drawn to visually.
There is no universal rule for what each colour means — meanings vary widely by community, family, and personal preference. Choose colours that feel right to you.
We explore colour meanings in more depth in our colour guide in The Waist Bead Journal.
Decide on a style
Consider what look you're after:
- Simple and minimal — a single colour or neutral tone that sits quietly under clothing
- Bold and expressive — bright colours, mixed tones, or multiple strands layered together
- Meaningful — colours chosen for personal, cultural, or spiritual significance
If you're unsure, a neutral or earth-toned strand is a good starting point — it pairs well with everything and works at any position.
Tie-on or adjustable?
All our strands are tie-on, which means they are tied directly onto the body and worn continuously. This is the traditional style and the most secure option for everyday wear.
If you're new to waist beads and unsure about tie-on, read our comparison: Tie-On vs Adjustable Waist Beads.
How many strands should I start with?
One. Starting with a single strand lets you get used to how waist beads feel, find the right position, and decide what you want next. Many people build a collection gradually over time.
What to expect when they arrive
Your strand will arrive ready to tie. Once you've tied and trimmed it, it's on. See How to Tie Waist Beads for a step-by-step guide, and our Care Guide for how to look after them.
